Let’s be honest – Nothing’s worse than shoulder pain when you’re playing a round of golf or taking a swing on the tennis court. And of course, we ALWAYS want a competitive edge and so THIS KIND OF PAIN IS SO NOT ACCEPTABLE!
So how do you know, in advance of the game, if you’re going to have shoulder problems?
Back pain really sucks!
And there are so many reasons why your back can become painful.
Top Reasons that Runners Experience Back Pain:
Your glutes are not engaged and matched by the engagement of your abs
A secure back for a run occurs when your glutes are fully engaged – top (illiac crest) to bottom (leg bone) – and matched with the equal engagement of your abs. If not both equally engaged, your Back will most likely experience pain.
You’re running with an out-turned foot
which will most likely lock up your hips, and
Will in turn, cause you intense low back pain.
Your pelvis is unstable and possibly has an anterior tilt –
AKA one side or the other of your pelvis is rolled forward.
Your muscle firing order is off.
An ideal Muscle Firing Order for Walking & Running is as follows:
First, there are some basic body mechanics that make all the difference for your back.
its comfort,
its functioning, and
the reduction of your pain
Curiously, the majority of my clients with low back pain have either/ or both an anterior tilt (which is caused by an imbalance of your glutes to abs) and particularly, a muscle firing order that’s “off-kilter.”
So Let’s Get into some Details. The ideal muscle firing order when your stride pushes off from your right foot and your swings your right leg forward when walking or running:
First to Fire: Right Hamstring
Second to Fire: Right Glute
Third to Fire: Left-Side Low Back Erector Muscle
Fourth to Fire: Right-Side Low Back Erector Muscle
Despite this ideal, many of my clients, especially those with low back pain, have a firing order that’s very different from the one above, i.e.:
First culprit: Most times, the glutes are laying low
– either firing at a low level or
– firing last
Second culprit: The low back muscles are forced to take up the slack and take over
– It’s like they’re the prima- donna “eager” to prove how strong they are LOL! OR
– It’s like they’re there to save the day and make up for glutes not firing
