Optimize Your Fitness!
In high school, I was constantly working out – I played volleyball, basketball, and softball – and through the years, loved working on the machines at various gyms including
Gold’s Gym.
Later in life, I joined the
Hockessin Athletic Club and was excited to try out the TRX workouts. It really seemed like my kind of workout!
Only one problem, I had some bad shoulder habits and as a result, compromised muscle mechanics. You see, after years of work as a corporate banker, channel marketing manager, PhD student, clinical therapist, etc. – all of which were desk jobs that translated into years of sitting in front of a computer for a minimum of 8 hours a day, every day, I developed a tendency to:
- roll my shoulders forward
And to focus and concentrate even more,
- I leaned my neck forward, and
- “Best of all,” I clinched my teeth to add that extra element of focus ☺
As it turns out, all of these habits – AKA my Compromised Muscle Mechanics – made TRX impossible!
Which means that the TRX shoulder exercises were killer – i.e. my attempts to do the shoulder series, including delt Ts and Ys, etc with compromised muscle mechanics meant that my muscles bit into my shoulders, and bit hard with intense pain! And I couldn’t believe how painful that bit was!
Although, I was excited to be working out and relieved that I was getting back to it after many years, it didn’t really seem fair that I couldn’t finish the workouts because of that intense shoulder pain!
The good news is that once I worked on my shoulders – once I worked to
- release my shoulder restrictions, and
- increase my shoulder range of motion,
I was totally able to go back to TRX and do every aspect of my TRX workout without pain!
