As discussed in the last post, keeping shoulder flexibility through the elasticity of your shoulder's connective tissue is both helpful and important.

So, how do you tell if you have a shoulder problem?

First clue - PAIN!

  • Is your shoulder generally painful when you move it?
  • Do you have complete ease of motion or do you feel strained?
  • When you move to a certain spot, does your shoulder rage with pain?

Beyond the pain, the best way to understand what's going on with your shoulder and where the issue might be is to do a few simple DIY (Do It Yourself) tests…

The Simplest Test

See if you experience pain when you make a few simple moves, i.e.:

  • Reach up - as if to grab something from a shelf
  • Reach behind your back - as if you were grabbing something from behind your seat

If you experience pain with either of these movements, you likely have shoulder muscle issues that can be helped with The Mind Body Whisperer Massage Method.

Old Habits Become the Mask of Pain

Funny thing, we often become so accustomed to how we hold our shoulders - AKA our shoulder habits - that we don’t realize that if the position of our shoulder alignment is “off,” we're essentially guaranteed an experience of pain.

How Does this Happen?

There are many ways we create shoulder habits that cause problems for our optimal muscle mechanics.  PS  We explore many of these possibilities during our sessions at The Mind Body Whisperer Massage.

For example, muscles work in teams.  One muscle (Team A) contracts for strength while the other muscle (Team B) stretches and provides support and stabilization for the movement.

So, if, for example, your pecs are super strong and can't be balanced by your rotator cuff muscles, you'll experience pain and over time, compromised muscle mechanics that cause further problems, including pain.

How Do You Know?

There are several movement-based tests that you can do to find out if your muscle mechanics are "off."  While we do many of these tests during our sessions at The Mind Body Whisperer, there are several “Do It Yourself” Tests that you can do in the comforts of your own home.

The Super Quick & Dirty DIY Shoulder Habit Test:

  • Can you put both arms behind your back and grab each wrist?
